ArcelorMittal: GIS in evolution

An industry giant like ArcelorMittal has an extensive set of GIS applications that are not all equally future proof. Needs are also evolving. How do you deal with this?

Challenge

Many GIS applications currently exist at ArcelorMittal Ghent. These are made with an older framework that’s outdated and slow. The geographical data are usually limited or only available as a technical drawing. ArcelorMittal wants a consistent high level of data quality and an up-to-date GIS architecture. ArcelorMittal has a clear vision for GIS, both at site level and globally for the group.

Solution

Geo Solutions analyzes the current GIS applications from ArcelorMittal and compares them with the current needs. Some outdated applications are being migrated and new applications are being developed.

The colleagues from Amigo are working on a future vision for GIS, where ArcelorMittal can evolve – both for Ghent specifically and for Arcelor worldwide. They analyse various technology solutions for GIS and provide advice that fits ArcelorMittal’s needs, requirements and future vision. They then develop a new GIS architecture, scalable to a more demanding GIS landscape.

ArcelorMittal uses the modern Angular Framework together with Openlayers, on which new applications can easily be added.

Result

ArcelorMittal uses the modern Angular Framework together with Openlayers, on which new applications can easily be added. A new generic basic component is created. From there the existing applications are rebuilt in a new way and at the same time unnecessary and little used applications are phased out or merged with other applications.
